Everything you need to know about dental implants

What is a dental implant? A dental implant is a screw, most often made of titanium, that is embedded in the jaw bone.

A dental implant restored tooth consists of 3 main separate elements:

  • the dental implant itself that inserted in the jaw bone
  • the prosthetic abutment of the implant - it attaches to the implant head and sits above the gingival line (creating a stable platform to which the prosthesis is attached)
  • the dental crown, which will attach to the prosthetic abutment

Dental implants provide a permanent structure, capable of supporting either individual dental crowns or several crowns, such as a dental bridge or a semifixed denture.

The benefits of dental implants

Dental implants offer patients both practical and psychological benefits such as:

  • increased overall comfort
  • better oral health
  • they allow you to speak better and more clear
  • they improve the byte and allow you to eat all you like
  • increased self-esteem - the crowns supported by dental implants look just like natural teeth
  • improved aesthetics - dental implants allow you to get the smile you always dreamed about

What is the lifespan of dental implants?

There are two factors that ultimately determine the life of a dental implant:

First of all, paying attention to oral hygiene and following an approved dental implant care plan (provided by your dentist) will help reduce the buildup of potentially harmful deposits, such as tartar and plaque.

Second, patients must attend professional dental checkups and cleanings at least once a year. Also, it is imperative that you report to your dentist as soon as possible any dental problem that arrises.

Poor oral hygiene and missing your regular appointments at the dental office will surely lead to accumulation of hard and soft deposits around the implants, which can cause gum infections, swelling, pain, bleeding, and bone damage.

If the right recommendations are followed, high quality dental implants (ex. Straumann dental implants) can be expected to last for decades.

How much does a dental implant cost?

The final price of the dental implant treatment is determined by the amount of work required to get the best possible result for each patient, by the experience of the doctor and equipment available.

For example, patients with pre-existing complications affecting the gums and teeth may need to undergo intermediate or extensive preparatory work, such as gum transplants and bone grafts.

Only after assessing the patient's individual health can the dentist assess the total cost of an individual dental implant procedure.

For example, patients who need bone grafts and other preliminary work can expect higher prices.

Dental implant care

The dentist will advise each patient on the proper dental implant care procedure.

A typical care plan will include regular visits to the dentist or dental hygienist. During these meetings, the condition of the soft tissue surrounding the implant site will be checked.

Bone density will also be monitored to ensure that any bone graft between is maintained as expected.

The overall integrity of dental implants also depends on the basics of the patient's personal oral hygiene. Most likely, your dentist will advise you to brush your teeth with a soft toothbrush, floss and use a water toothpick.

For lasting results, we recommend you to choose quality dental implants and a dental clinic that is up to date with the latest technology!
